Leigh broke her jaw
Posted by Kevin in Leigh, New Experience on November 15, 2010
It’s amazing how one can be skating along and then in an instant, boom! On the floor, in pain, bleeding, jaw broken in two places and looking ahead to months of soft food/liquid diet.
We were at the Fairview Christian School skate night at the Skate Deck in Everett, WA yesterday, Saturday, Nov 13th and had been having a great time with friends. Then, right at the end, came the call for races. Leigh decided that she would participate and felt pretty confident with her balance. Well, the start was called and they were off. She ended up being in fourth place (of four) and so, her competitive spirit kicked in and she decided to push things a bit. After rounding the first turn for the second lap, she tried putting on speed to overtake the person ahead of her and suddenly her balance was gone and she was down on the floor.
At first it didn’t seem too bad, but then it became apparent that she was in a lot of pain. We rushed out to her and she was bleeding pretty badly from a gash in her chin, she reported that her chin hurt and her ears felt cold. One fellow was very helpful right away. Apparently he’d been a hockey player and had seen (and/or experienced) similar injuries before and he was able to help her and to take charge of the situation. We got the blood stanched and figured out a plan to get her to the hospital.
There was quite a bit of confusion, but we finally got it arranged to have Morgan go with the Ramos’ and Korin went with us to the emergency room at Providence Hospital on Pacific in Everett. We arrived there at about 7:30pm and got the care she needed over the next 7 hours. Though the triage nurse did not make a complete diagnosis, through Leigh & Korin’s communication with the radiologists and nurses, she ended up getting x-rays for her right hand, pinky finger and wrist (nothing broken there!) and then a CT scan of her jaw. The final diagnoses was that she had broken her jaw in two places. At the chin and also by her left ear. They are clean breaks and won’t require too much to get re-aligned, but she will be having her jaw wired shut for 4-6 weeks and will be on a liquid diet for at least that long.
There’s been great support from our Fairview School and Church families. We really, really appreciate their prayers and their help in the form of dinners and assistance with getting Leigh to her various appointments.
Great Anniversary!

Leigh and I had a great 16th Anniversary trip last weekend. Found a cozy hotel in Anacortes, WA, stayed two nights on Fidalgo island surrounded by water and beautiful views and the weather was even pretty good! We mostly were just lazy; spending time together at the hotel watching endless episodes of Myth Busters or Dirty Jobs or reading, but we also took a walk through downtown, window shopping a bit and finding nice places to eat. On Saturday, we took a jet boat ride through Deception pass. Nice views, but a pretty tame ride. On Sunday, we went Kayaking. First time for both of us and we took a 3 hour tour around Burrows island, just south of Fidalgo in a two man Kayak. We didn’t annoy each other too badly and got the hang of it pretty well…though we tended to drift off course quite a bit whenever I wanted to take pictures… It was overcast, but not too cold and it didn’t start raining until the trip was over. Nice timing! All in all, a very nice trip. Refreshing to be away from all the cares and responsibilities for a while. Many thanks to the families who hosted our kids over this weekend!
Leigh surgery a success!
Praise God! Leigh made it through her gall bladder surgery successfully! She’s sore and very tired, but it was definately a good thing for it to be removed as it was definately not working correctly poised to inflict more pain. Thank you Tori for being with her throughout the day and supporting her in this! Thanks Loren & Dora for dinner and prayer! Thanks everyone else for your prayers and thoughts!
The surgeon had to make a few more cuts than originally anticipated as the gall bladder was enlarged and plugged. The fluid inside was completely clear, so it had obviously not been working for it’s intended purpose for some time. There were many stones inside and one was plugging the entrance, ready to move down the tube and be a big pain…literally. We’re very glad for the timing and for the expertise of the doctors and technicians that cared for her at Northwest Hospital where the procedure took place.
She arrived at the hospital at 10:30 and the operation was complete by 2:45 and she was awake and in recovery at that time. Due to some back pain, some additional pain-killers were proscribed, causing some drowsiness and extending her hospital time a bit. However, Tori was able to bring her home at 8pm and she’s now resting fairly comfortably in bed for the night.
Thanks again for your prayers and support!
Living with Crohns
Posted by Kevin Tucker in Leigh, Prayer on July 5, 2007
Leigh has been (almost) officially diagosed with Crohns disease, a GI tract immune disorder where her immune system in the small intestine is attacking her body instead of just the bad bacteria.? She has lost a lot of weight (which she isn’t too sad about), but it’s on the verge of being too much.? She’s started some medication just today to see if it will work to get this problem into remission within a couple of months.
Please keep her in your prayers!
Fairview VBS

Fairview is hosting a Vacation Bible School in the evenings this week from 6pm to 8pm that the kids will be attending and us adults will probably be helping in.? It’s going to be fun!
Another baseball weekend
This was the weekend of the RUG Little League Hit-a-thon and picture day.? Created a new picture? gallery for them.? Not only that, but Zach’s team also managed to have a game scheduled that day.? He and his team played well as always.? His friend Evan on his team got the first Grand Slam of the season.? Way to go Mariners!
Josh and Zach have been soliciting support for their hit-a-thon last week and have one more week to ask for additional sponsors and collect funds.? If you’re interested in help out their league to pay for new uniforms, equipment, and such, the boys would be glad to hear from you!? You can sponsor them for a flat fee or per foot for their longest hit.? Josh, at the minor league level, hit 100 feet.? Zach, at the coach pitch where they let the ball roll before counting the distance, managed 165 feet.
Morgan decided to spend her time with her friend Drea, even though her family was cleaning house.? She said she’d rather clean with her friend than stand around at a baseball field…?
Some friends had some tickets to the Mariners that night that they couldn’t use, so Leigh took Josh, Zach and Loren Nelson to the game.? Too bad the Mariners didn’t do so well.? Morgan and Kevin stayed over at the Gordons for dinner and had Pizza Hut pizza and watched some episodes of the Addams Family and the Monkeys.? Funny stuff.? If you ever want to find a movie or tv show you can’t find anywhere else, try the Scarecrow video store on Roosevelt and 50th.? They have everything!
This Sunday we enjoyed services at Fairview, then Leigh went to spend some time working on quilts for Project Linus at Pacific Fabrics up on Northgate Way.? Morgan spent some time with Loren & Dora at their house and Kevin & the boys went over to Maple Leaf Park and spent some quality time in the batting cage.? They even let me hit a little bit.
At 5, we headed back to Fairview for a nice time watching a video from Anderson about the music of the Church of God over the years.? It was really good.? One amazing thing they showed was a “choir” of 12 pianists!? They played double on 6 grand pianos and even had a director!? It was pretty amazing.
Back at home, I (Kevin) spent some time out in the yard until dark, tying up raspberry vines (transplants from Uncle Mas’s garden) and cleaning up the tiger lilly bed.? Need to figure out what’s eating the tiger lilies and see how to protect them…
