Huge bout of family this month!

Is that the right way to put it?? Hope you don’t take it negatively!? It was a lot of fun, but it was just…a lot!

Two weddings of close cousins (close enough where they wanted our family in pictures).? One on Aug 3rd and one on Aug 17th.? Both with picnics the next day.? My sister, Nina, flew in with her three kids a few days before the first wedding and stayed with us.? My parents came up for that one, then we all went down to Hermiston the next week and helped my parents organize and pack.? They’re moving to Colorado.? (Actually on the road as I write this, if they are on schedule.)? So that’s a huge change.? Then everyone, including my brother, Bryce, and his wife and daughter came up for the Aug 17th wedding, various people staying with us or in hotels different nights, long night for the kids for the wedding in Federal Way that day (we brought a babysitter with us for various reasons) and then back down to Point Defiance for the picnic the next day.

I’ve got some pics of Cindy’s and Olivia’s weddings? posted now.

Car “fun”

Well, looks like we’re in the market for a new – well, new for us – van…? Heading home from our third trip to Ephrata, WA to drop off Josh for his second week of TBI Baseball camp and right outside Issaquah, our front, driver side tire blows out.? Not just flat, but completely destroyed!? Get the spare on and our transmission, which hasn’t been acting all that great lately anyway has decided to get worse.? It refused to shift into 3rd or 4th gears and so we’re stuck at 45mph or slower on the freeway.

That was on Sunday.? Of course, now that we’ve been looking at other vans, our current one is on its best behavior…

Memorial Day Weekend

This was a pretty full weekend for us.? My cousin Zoe came to visit from Milton-Freewater, OR for the Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center.? Morgan got to perform in the Children’s Theatre that weekend, singing Caio, Bella, Caio with the Treble Jr. Choir, a part of the Pacifica Chorus.? She really enjoyed that.? She then got to spend Sunday afternoon touring more of the Folklife with Zoe.? The boys were not quite as interested.? On Saturday, I stopped in at the “Rhythm Hut” where a whole group of people were hitting drums and shaking rattles and hitting bells just about as loudly as possible.? I found an empty drum and joined the fun!? Josh and Morgan got into it a bit also, but Zach really didn’t care for it.

We also hosted a big BBQ for the CAPS board that I am involved with.? It was great to be able to have our entire families interact and get to know one another rather than it always being just a men’s thing.

FCS Melodrama

Don’t miss the FCS Melodrama!? The Secret of Cornbreat Flats (or, How? Many Beans? Does? It Take to Explode?) will be presented by students in the? 5th through 8th grades.? It’s going on both Friday and Saturday night from 6pm to 9pm June 8th and 9th.? It’s always a really fun night!

No, none of our kids are in it yet, but we’ve gone every year!

After show comments:? It was great!? A lot of fun and the kids did awesome!? I can’t believe the number of puns that “Sue Rae” packed into this show… :-) ?

Notes: Morgan attended this viewing with her friend Micalya so that she could go to the sleepover at her gymnasitics tomorrow.

General Stuff

Whew! It’s easy to get behind in describing what’s going on with us!? The events just keep flying by.? ? The Royals had their? first (very narrow) defeat of the season.? The kids had a great program at school on Thursday night. The Royals had a strong comeback Saturday morning and Zach had a great game that afternoon, too!? Zach had a really fun time at his friend and classmate, Samual Haven’s birthday party right after his game.

On Sunday, to celebrate Mother’s Day, we decided that Black Angus would be a bit more comfortable than a picnic this year with the heavy clouds and cold breeze blowing.? Leigh got a free afternoon when I took the kids over to their cousin’s to help Erich put together Katy’s new basketball hoop.? That was quite the engineering feat as the instructions were quite unhelpful.

Morgan and I went up to Bitter Lake to cheer on the Fairview softball team? on Monday night.? We have a very strong team and they won the game with a 10+ point margin.? Debbie C put in a good showing as well, getting on base twice!? And home, once by proxy…? Kate Hendersen ran for her from 1st base on and Debbie was seen in the dugout cheering “herself” on. :-)

Another baseball weekend

This was the weekend of the RUG Little League Hit-a-thon and picture day.? Created a new picture? gallery for them.? Not only that, but Zach’s team also managed to have a game scheduled that day.? He and his team played well as always.? His friend Evan on his team got the first Grand Slam of the season.? Way to go Mariners!

Josh and Zach have been soliciting support for their hit-a-thon last week and have one more week to ask for additional sponsors and collect funds.? If you’re interested in help out their league to pay for new uniforms, equipment, and such, the boys would be glad to hear from you!? You can sponsor them for a flat fee or per foot for their longest hit.? Josh, at the minor league level, hit 100 feet.? Zach, at the coach pitch where they let the ball roll before counting the distance, managed 165 feet.

Morgan decided to spend her time with her friend Drea, even though her family was cleaning house.? She said she’d rather clean with her friend than stand around at a baseball field…?

Some friends had some tickets to the Mariners that night that they couldn’t use, so Leigh took Josh, Zach and Loren Nelson to the game.? Too bad the Mariners didn’t do so well.? Morgan and Kevin stayed over at the Gordons for dinner and had Pizza Hut pizza and watched some episodes of the Addams Family and the Monkeys.? Funny stuff.? If you ever want to find a movie or tv show you can’t find anywhere else, try the Scarecrow video store on Roosevelt and 50th.? They have everything!

This Sunday we enjoyed services at Fairview, then Leigh went to spend some time working on quilts for Project Linus at Pacific Fabrics up on Northgate Way.? Morgan spent some time with Loren & Dora at their house and Kevin & the boys went over to Maple Leaf Park and spent some quality time in the batting cage.? They even let me hit a little bit.

At 5, we headed back to Fairview for a nice time watching a video from Anderson about the music of the Church of God over the years.? It was really good.? One amazing thing they showed was a “choir” of 12 pianists!? They played double on 6 grand pianos and even had a director!? It was pretty amazing.

Back at home, I (Kevin) spent some time out in the yard until dark, tying up raspberry vines (transplants from Uncle Mas’s garden) and cleaning up the tiger lilly bed.? Need to figure out what’s eating the tiger lilies and see how to protect them…

Crazy weekend

Been meaning to write about the amazingly busy weekend we just had…but the busy-ness just hasn’t stopped!? Two baseball games, a gymnastics meet, Leigh’s Creative Memories Memoranza event and a choir performance!? In the mix, we had Andrew Saka with us for a time and we got to have a nice BBQ with the Gordon family as well.? Busy, but good.

Both boys played very well in their games.? Josh got on base several times, hitting runners in, played catcher, 1st base, center field and pitched two innings.? The first inning up, he threw only 10 times!? One of the parents has been keeping score and gave Josh? the scoresheet he’d kept on the? previous game where? he did so well.? That was really? nice!? You can check out the scores and what Josh had to say about the game as well.

Zach‘s team, the Mariners, played very well also.? Zach hit a great home run and did an awesome job of fielding in several positions.? Their league doesn’t keep score and it was a pretty close game, but I think they probably would have come out on top!? :-)

Morgan enjoyed spending some time at the Memoranza with Leigh during Zach’s game and then the boys (including Andrew!) took her to her 1st real gymnastics meet at Seattle Gymnastics Academy.? She did great!? She earned a 9.9 for her vault!? The next Mary Lou!? :-) ? Her AAA team, the Elastic Stars,? earned 2nd place (only 2 tenths of a point behind 1st place) of four teams competing.? Andrew and the boys enjoyed playing on the misc gymnastics equipment that they had access to while waiting during the 2.5 hour meet.? Unfortunatly, my camera was on the fritz, so I have no shots of this time…very sad.? I’ll be sure to have it fixed for the next one though.

The real highlight of this weekend was witnessing Zach getting baptized during service at the Fairview Church where we attend.? He did great and Pastor Dan said that he was honored to be asked by Zach to do the baptism.? Zach had Pastor Dan read from the first chapter of Genesis.

After church, Morgan’s choir, the Junior Treble Chorus, took part in the Pacifica Showcase performance that also featured the Ekstein Jazz ensemble that has consistently placed 1st in various competitions.? Several of the Jazz ensemble members are also members of the Pacifica choirs.? Morgan’s choir sang very well.? They performed 3 numbers, two selections from the musical, Oliver!, Food, and Consider youself and a song called Funicula Funiculi.? I’ll see if I can put edited versions of their songs on this site from the DVD when it comes out (which you can order yourself if you’re so inclined — very good music!).? Our good friends, the Gordon’s joined us at the performance to hear Morgan and enjoy the show.

? After the performance, of course, the kids wanted to continue spending time together, so we arranged a BBQ with the Gordons and spent an enjoyable evening talking about kids, Seinfeld, Garbage Island and solar panels.
